Wellness, Nutrition, and Exercise

Today, more and more of us are interested in a higher level of health called Wellness. Beyond merely feeling better and preventing health problems, we want to fully enjoy life by being at our very best mentally, physically, and socially. The World Health Organization has my favorite definition of health. “Health is the optimum state of physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”. I would add that true health is only possible with an optimally functioning nervous system. When your nervous system functions at its optimum, YOU function at your optimum! Remember that the first 50 years of chiropractic care was NOT about back and neck pain, it was about health care. Patients went to the chiropractor for regular adjustments because they knew that they would be less susceptible to contagious diseases. I highly recommend regular adjustments for a healthier you in 2004.

Balanced nutrition is necessary for maintenance and restoration of health. This is why most of you know I recommend removing fast food and other “offending” foods from your diet. Exercise is just as important as nutrition in order to keep our bodies healthy and working. Again most of you know that I highly recommend some form of regular exercise. Simply walking for 15-20 minutes a day is a win-win situation for you. Its good for your body and it reduces stress!

Chiropractic care, because of its focus on the nervous system, IS an important part of a wellness lifestyle. Maintaining a properly functioning nervous system is essential if you want to be your very best.

Good nutrition, exercise, and other preventive measures are part of a wellness lifestyle. I can’t think of anything more important than adding regular chiropractic care to your other health practices. Have a safe and healthy holiday and 2004. See you in the office!

The Facts about Children and Asthma

Asthma is known as a chronic condition where an individual has difficulty breathing due to a bronchial hypersensitivity disorder. There are three main physiological changes that occur in the lungs causing the difficulty to breathe. The first is the cells in the air tubes make more mucus than normal, which in turn clogs up the tubes. Next the air tubes begin to swell and expand. Eventually this could cause tightness in the surrounding muscles. Some symptoms of an attack can include difficulty breathing, trouble talking, neck muscles and skin around the ribs tighten up, lips and fingernails may turn blue, and in an infant you may see chest expansion. This can lead to a life-threatening disease is not managed properly.

An asthma attack may occur suddenly or may take several days to develop. It is characterized by the lungs sensitivity to various stimuli. Some of the various stimuli include:

  • Respiratory infections, colds
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Allergic reactions to such allergens as pollen, mold, animal dander, feather, dust, food and cockroaches
  • Exercise
  • Indoor and outdoor air pollutants
  • Exposure to cold air or sudden temperature change
  • Vigorous exercise
  • Excitement/stress

Asthma can affect an individual of any size, shape, color, age or sex. In 2003, it was estimated that 31% of the individuals that suffered from this condition where children under the age of 18. Here are just a few of the surprising statistics connected to children and asthma:

  • It is estimated that 6.1 million children under 18 currently suffer from asthma
  • Asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalization among children under the age of 15 and is the leading cause of chronic illness among children
  • 658,000 pediatric emergency room visits in 1999 were due to asthma
  • Asthma accounts for 14.6 million lost school days in 2002
  • Secondhand smoke can cause serious harm to children. It is estimated that 200,000 to one million asthmatic children will have the condition worsened by exposure to secondhand smoke
  • The direct cost of managing a patient with severe asthma has been estimated at more than $18,000 per year
  • Children with asthma will spend approximately 7.3 million days per year restricted to bed rest

– Statistics from the American Lung Association

Natural Health Care Approaches (Linked to Asthma Attack Reduction)

  • Make sure your child gets plenty of Vitamin E. Researchers have found that a higher of vitamin E, an anti-oxidant, lowers the serum IgE concentrations and in turn lowers the frequency of allergen sensitization
  • Incorporate Omega-3 fatty acids. This will help level out the consumption of the polysaturated fats consumed in today’s diet
  • Vitamin C will help boost your child’s immune system
  • Keep children out of smoky environments
  • Remember to get your child’s spine checked regularly by a chiropractor. Research chows that upper thoracic subluxations have been shown to compromise nerve impulses that supply the lungs. Compromise of the nervous system can put the body in distress, which can lead to loss of function and eventually health. So have your child’s spine checked today to make sure it is functioning optimally.

Subluxation: The Silent Killer

Recently I was reading an article about hypertension and the title of the article was “high blood pressure- the silent killer”. It made me reflect on my experience as a chiropractor and specifically how much I see patients stuck in the health care model of “pain care”. Most people are used to seeing the doctor only when they are having some type of health crisis. In fact this is what I see as the major problem in health care today. We are only seeking treatment when we have experienced a crisis such as a heart attack, a diagnosis of diabetes, or are in the middle of a bout of excruciating sciatic nerve pain. Only then do we seek out treatment and perhaps consider a lifestyle change.

I read an interesting article the other day regarding the World Health Organization and how it ranked the healthiest nations in the world. Health care in the United States is second to none, right? It’s the best system in the world, most of us would agree. You may be surprised to know that the United States spends more money on health care than any nation on the planet (13.7% of gross domestic product to be exact) yet we are no where near the top of the ranking of healthiest nations! In fact we rank a dismal 37th out of 191 nations. Does that make any sense to you? How could we spend the most amount of money per patient than any other nation and yet rank so low? I think the answer has to do with what I was referring to above, crisis care.

This country does very little in the way of WELLNESS care or preventative care. Recently I have seen a slight movement toward wellness care. But what does your medical doctor know about wellness or preventative care? I suggest you ask him or her. In my profession we have preached wellness care from day one. In fact I recently saw an amusing quote that a colleague shared with me that stated, “Chiropractors were wellness doctors when wellness wasn’t cool”, and that is so true. I remind patients in my office all the time that the first 50 years of chiropractic care (1895 to 1945 roughly) was NOT about neck and back pain, it was about health care. Patients went to the chiropractor because they were sick and they knew that they could get well if their bodies nervous system was working at its best. They knew that they could fight off illness faster, and even prevent illness from occurring in the future, if they maintained proper spinal health. You may be thinking how could it be that simple?

It is that simple. Subluxations—minor dislocations of vertebrae that interfere with your nervous system are truly the silent killers that deplete your health. When the nervous system doesn’t function neither do you! Why do I refer to subluxated vertebrae as the “silent killer”? Because most of the time they are painless for a significant period of time. You don’t feel subluxations in the spine immediately but make no mistake you will feel the effects eventually. And this can be in the form of many, many different conditions. Most subluxation based doctors do not care to hear about your condition(s), and will surprisingly tell you that. They will tell you that they do not treat “xyz” condition; they treat subluxations in the spine which deplete your body’s ability to function at its optimum. It’s not our fault that children will have fewer ear infections, recover from bed wetting or have fewer colds and flu’s throughout the year. That is the nervous system for you, it’s the master system of the body. When your nervous system functions interference free, YOU function at a higher level and you have a higher quality of life. It’s as simple as that.

If you were a patient that went to a chiropractor for a condition, and the condition resolved after a certain amount of adjustments and you dropped out of care because you thought you didn’t need it anymore I hope you reconsider after reading this article. Call your chiropractor and ask him or her if you could make an appointment to have your spine checked for subluxations. A good, honest, hard working chiropractor like most of us are will do that for you and recommend some type of infrequent preventative care plan for you. Maintenance prevents crisis. Could it be that simple? Could we really have a healthier nation if we all were under Chiropractic care? There is no doubt about it. It’s one of the most wonderful and yet frustrating things to know as a Chiropractor. People that are under Chiropractic care are healthier than those that are not. If you do not think this is so, just ask a chiropractic patient. Remember friends, simplicity is a sign of truth.

Sports

Dr. Brian of Delta Chiropractic Associates Inc. of Escanaba explains that many sports-related injuries involve the spine and can restrict range of motion, reduce strength, slow reflexes, shorten endurance, and decrease performance. Chiropractic care for these types of injuries has become increasingly popular. Proper spinal function is essential for peak performance at work or play.

Dr. Brian explains. “Chiropractic care helps restore function to spinal joints that are “locked up”, fixated, and not moving properly. Besides helping to relieve pain, chiropractic care can also help reduce inflammation. Muscles, tendons, and ligaments depend upon proper joint movement for peak performance. Chiropractic manipulation, along with muscle stretching and strengthening can relieve the pain of “shin splints” and develop greater muscle strength to guard against re-injury.”

An aerobic exercise program or a plan of brisk walking can improve muscle tone and help avoid strains, sprains, and other activity-restricting health problems according to Dr. Brian.

Call Dr. Brian for a care plan based on your age, condition, and health objectives. Remember to prevent sports injuries by properly stretching, warm up/warm down exercises, and by staying in shape.

Sciatica

Sciatica is a severe pain in the leg caused from compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, according to Dr. Brian of Delta Chiropractic Associates Inc. Conservative chiropractic care can be quite successful in removing the cause of sciatica and low back pain.

The sciatic nerves are the largest (and longest) nerves of the body, running down the back of each leg. When these nerves are irritated or affected by the inflammation of nearby soft tissues, doctors refer to this as sciatica.

Dr. Brian states, “In the past, treatment has involved pain medications, muscle relaxers, physical therapy, and even surgery. The chiropractic approach is to use carefully directed and controlled pressure to remove the interference from spinal structures. Chiropractic “adjustments” can be quite effective in reducing nerve irritation and its associated pain”.

“Sciatica, like other health problems that can be traced to the spine, often respond dramatically to the restoration of normal spinal function through chiropractic care,” explains Dr. Brian.

Rehabilitation

When muscles, tendons, or ligaments of the spine are damaged through car accidents, overexertion, work injuries, repetitive motion, or simply weakened by inactivity an important step toward complete rehabilitation is restoring proper spinal function through chiropractic adjustment. Overlooking the importance of improved range of motion and muscle strengthening can result in a relapse, with your original health problems returning again and again. Chiropractic rehabilitation involves the restoration of proper joint function of the spine or extremities, and the strengthening of supporting muscles and soft tissues. See. Dr. Brian today for ways you can speed the healing process and strengthen the supporting soft tissues of your spine through appropriate rehabilitation.

Osteoporosis and Arthritis

Regardless of age, when spinal damage goes uncorrected, the body deposits calcium on the surface of adjacent bones that are not moving properly. This worsening process is called Subluxation Degeneration and can occur throughout the spine. Subluxation Degeneration is related to the same process the body uses to mend a broken bone by attempting to fuse the adjacent bones together. If neglected long enough, this splinting effect can result in complete fusion. With early detection, appropriate chiropractic care has been shown to slow, stop, or even reverses the early stages of this process. See Dr. Brian at Delta Chiropractic Associates Inc. to design a program of preventive care for you.

Neck Pain, Whiplash, and Ear Infections

Is there a constant throbbing in your neck? Do you notice a “grinding” sound as you turn your head? Have you suffered a whiplash type injury? Does your child suffer from reoccurring ear infections? Dr. Brian of Delta Chiropractic Associates Inc. recommends a thorough chiropractic examination.

Neck pain is a common health complaint. After all, your neck supports and balances the equivalent of a 10-13-lb. bowling ball. The chiropractic approach to neck pain is to locate its underlying cause. This begins with a complete case history and thorough examination. Special attention is given to the structure and function of the spine and its affects on the nervous system. If caught early, the inflammation of a whiplash injury can be reduced and scar tissue minimized.

Chiropractic care has also shown significant success in treating ear infections in children and adults. Spinal manipulation helps to promote drainage and stimulate the immune system for and effective, drugless route to healing.

Consult Dr. Brian before needlessly enduring neck discomfort or the pain of ear infections. Enjoy the drugless benefits of chiropractic and see how good you can feel.

Lower Back Pain

It is difficult to calculate the millions of dollars of lost work and untold suffering every day from lower back pain. Dr. Brian at Delta Chiropractic Associates Inc. in Escanaba knows that there can be many causes for lower back pain, among them are improper sitting or lifting, trauma, over-exertion, or inherited spinal abnormalities. Chiropractic adjustments help normalizes function to reduce painful symptoms.

When vertebrae lose their normal motion or position, the soft pulpy center of the disc can bulge or rupture. “When a disc bulges it can cause pressure on the spinal cord or nearby roots that exit the spine and causes numbness, tingling, or pain running down into the leg,” Dr. Brian explains.

Surgical treatment may involve cutting away the bulging tissue. This method is often unnecessary and rarely addresses the underline structural cause of the problem, not to mention the dangers of anesthesia and the formation of scar tissue. Conservative chiropractic care is safer and often more effective than back surgery as supported by many research projects.

Dr. Brian states, “Chiropractic care attempts to restore normal motion and position of spinal bones. This functional improvement often reduces symptoms, leading to improved health.” A growing number of scientific experts are recognizing the simplicity and success of the chiropractic approach – along with people who want to avoid surgery!

What if you already have spinal surgery? It is possible for a chiropractor to adjust someone’s spinal column if a surgery has been performed. Even though the surgery may have permanently altered the spinal, chiropractic care is still an option.

After a thorough examination and complete explanation, if you are a candidate for chiropractic, Dr. Brian will design a care program unique to your spinal problem. Disc related conditions are serious and may require a program of regular visits. Doctors of Chiropractic regularly consult with neurologists, radiologists and orthopedic specialists when designing care programs for patient with disc involvement.
